Film Screening and Puppets by Nicole Emmons

The other night at the Musee,

 we had an evening with

Filmmaker Nicole Emmons!

She screened a few of her experimental 

animation films and we got to take a close up look 

at her stop motion puppets on display..

Afterwards, Nicole shared stories about

the making of her films.

 One of our favorite bath house films! It's a 1999 

experimental film from Germany directed by Veit Helmer.

The style evokes early 20th century silent movies and motifs commonly found in German expressionism. The sparse dialog is presented in a mix of European languages. It's a story about keeping a dilapidated 

bathhouse a float in the midst of a desolate landscape..

In light of the obstacle-d plan A... We have a plan B for the evening..      For our second act - We invite you to hang out, mingle, have some popcorn, a slice of pizza and watch a movie projection....  All from the comfort of your own lawn chair. [ bring a lawn chair if you'd like or find a spot on the couch or shag rug ] There will be plenty of refreshments also. Pull up a seat...

The Musée will be taken over with ‘PRESTIDIGITATION’  by Tommi Cahill and Accompanied by the aural presentation of 

Ronnie Barnett. 

~ Tommi Cahill is interested in imagery and media. She borrowed printing plates that date from the late 1800’s to the late 1950’s from magician and magic historian Mike Caveney which she printed on an old letterpress at the University of Redlands. The plates have not seen ink and paper in decades. The plates are mainly 

drawings of tricks and apparatus used in advertisements and of 

magicians who would pack them in a trunk and travel with them from town to town. Each time the magician would enter a new town the magicians’ assistant would carry the plates over to the local newspaper along with information about the show s/he would be performing. The plates and information would then be printed in the paper with the hope of gaining audience members for the shows.

   Tommi received her BFA at California Institute of the Arts and her MFA at Yale University. She has widely shown her work 

nationally as well as internationally. Her work is part of the 

permanent collection at the Yale University Art Gallery. She 

currently lives in Los Angeles and teaches Photography full time at the University of Redlands. 

~ Ronnie Barnett is a Texas born musician who now lives in Los Angeles. Ronnie has been performing and collecting records since the age of 5. Ronnie has played in the L.A. based band The Muffs during their entire 22 year existence. He was once pictured with David Lee Roth.

... A bit of Len Lye in Dufay color and Biguine D'Amour by Don Baretto and his Cuban Orchestra to add Kaleidoscope colors and sound to your last week of the year...

As a student, Lye became convinced that motion could be part of the language of art, leading him to early (and now lost) experiments with kinetic sculpture, as well as a desire to make film. Lye was also one of the first Pakeha artists to appreciate the art of Māori, Australian Aboriginal, Pacific Island and African cultures, and this had great influence on his work. In the early 1920s Lye travelled widely in the South Pacific. He spent extended periods in Australia and Samoa, where he was expelled by the New Zealand colonial administration for living within an indigenous community.

Working his way as a coal trimmer aboard a steam ship, Lye moved to London in 1926. There he joined the Seven and Five Society, exhibited in the 1936 International Surrealist Exhibition and began to make experimental films. Following his first animated film Tusalava, Lye began to make films in association with the British General Post Office, for the GPO Film Unit. His 1935 film A Colour Box, an advertisement for "cheaper parcel post", was the first direct film screened to a general audience. It was made by painting vibrant abstract patterns on the film itself, synchronizing them to a popular dance tune by Don Baretto and His Cuban Orchestra. A panel of animation experts convened in 2005 by the Annecy film festival put this film among the top ten most significant works in the history of animation... more on Len Lye { http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Len_Lye }
